Finding an adoptive name

Finding someone who was adopted when you do not know their adoptive name.

I can only assist you once you know the adoptive name of the person you are looking for.

If you do not know the person’s adoptive name, I am unable to find it for you, but there are other agencies which can help you.

Your first step should be to contact your Local Authority and ask if they offer an intermediary service to trace and contact an adopted adult.

If they do not offer such a service, then they may be able to direct you to an alternative agency, or you can find one for yourself. Click here to search for an agency to help you.

It is also recommended that you request a search of the old NORCAP contact register and place your details on the Adoption Contact Register for your area of the UK.

Please be aware that you do not have a right to know the adopted person’s new identity, just to have a search made for them. Once they have been found and contacted, they will be asked if they give their consent to having their details disclosed to you.

The website www.adoptionsearchreunion.org.uk contains lots of useful information which may help you with your enquiry.

“I first got in contact with Kathy after she was highly recommended by an individual at County Hall. I work alongside individuals with Learning disabilities and started to linkwork a lady who has lived in supported living for over 20 years. Mary* had no family and very little memory of her past history.

With Kathy's help, hard work, professional approach and determination Mary now has a family tree and the resting place of her parents, who she can now pay her respects to. Kathy also found a half-brother (not a step brother as Mary had once thought) who Mary has met and formed a close bond with, and a cousin and his family who happen to not live a million miles away. Most of all a family Mary has yearned for many years.

None of it possible without Kathy and we can't thank her enough for her expertise, hard work and determination. I would highly recommend her.”
